Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
