Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
