WHO Sounds Concern Over Severe Shortage of Weight-Loss Medications

Fewer than a tenth of patients that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy are able to get them, caution the WHO as it publishes its inaugural advice on the medications.

Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

According to estimates, over two billion will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with holistic and lifelong care," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are key hurdles to universal availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, notes the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even under the present best projected scenario, the supply of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, according to the WHO.

The recommendation encourages countries and companies to widen access, by strategies such as licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in multiple countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

These medications replicate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so users eat less.

Individuals commonly see weight reduction in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies indicates people may regain a significant portion a year later of stopping the drug, when their normal appetite return.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your chance for contracting diseases, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain cancers.

Obesity concerns people in all nations and was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
